Unit One Projects

Stamp

Plan

- I formed the shape of the stamp out of one piece of clay

- I carved the spiral out of the flat side

Reflection

I am happy with the shape of the stamp. I chose to form it out of one piece of clay instead of two separate pieces because I wanted to be sure it was sturdy, and I wasn't positive I could get that with scoring and slipping. Although I have not used it yet, and therefore am not sure about how useful it will be, I am happy with how the spiral turned out. I did not glaze it as that will not contribute to its purpose.

Face

Plan

- I formed a lump of clay and started by forming the eye sockets and adding the eyes

- I added other features of the face (nose, brow ridge, eyebrows, chin, etc) and scored and slipped them on

- I added details (wrinkles) by carving into the clay

- I carved out the back so that the clay was thin enough

Reflection

Going into the face, I did not have a plan for who it would be. As I added features, I saw an elderly face emerging, and continued to follow that until I was happy with the features. I did not glaze it because I did not see a purpose in it and I did not want to waste glaze.

Underglaze Piece

Plan

- I rolled out a slab of clay and used a slump mold method to form it into the shape of a bowl

- I painted the background yellow and then added the apple, the stem and leaf, and the decoration on the apple all using underglaze

- After the first firing I used a lowfire clearglaze and painted over the entire piece

Reflection

I am happy with how the bowl turned out. Unfortunately, I got one smudge of brown on the bowl that the yellow was not able to cover, but besides that, I am happy with the underglazing. I could have smoothed out the edges more. For some reason, there are some parts that are not completely smooth, despite my complete clear glazing. I think this may have been due to too many layers of underglaze
