Unit Three Projects
Slump Mold / Sgrafifto
Plan
- I rolled out a thin slab of clay and placed it on a pre-existing plate
- I painted the plate with a mix of royal blue and black underglaze
- Once it had dried I used a needle tool to scrape out a design
- After the first firing I glazed it with clear glaze
Reflection
- I am very happy with this piece. I Like how the color and design came out, and the glazing is very even. I wish I had evened out the edge of the plate more, but besides that, I don't have any problems with it.

Relief Carving
Plan
- I rolled out a slab of clay and cut out a rectangle
- I added pieces of clay for the body, arms, legs, tail, and head, and scored and slipped them on
- Using a needle tool, I carved out the designs on the body
- I used a small loop tool to carve out parts of the base and then smoothed that out to create the wave effect.
Reflection
- I was very happy with the greenware piece. However, I never saw it come out from the kiln or found it on the shelves. I'm not sure how it was lost but I am not able to locate it.

Coil Building
Plan
- At first I planned to make a bowl where the body was made out of coils. However, when I attempted that, it dried up and fell apart, so I changed tactics
- I made the bowl using a pinch pot method
- I then added coils on the outside, leaving a space for the head. Because I wanted the coils to be small, I rolled out a thin slab and cut out long strips to make into coils instead of the traditional method
- I made the head separately and hollowed it out
- I then made a hole in the side of the bowl and scored and slipped the head on
- I made four same sized balls and made them into small cylinders for the legs
- I slipped and scored them on and added a small amount of clay around the base to make sure the connection was secure
- After the first firing I painted it with purple and blue glaze
Reflection
- I am mostly happy with this piece. Some of the coils near the base of the bowl were squished and lost their definition, and I wish I had been more careful with that. The legs are also cracking and I wish I had connected those more securely.

Slab With Darts
Plant
- Going into this, I didn't really have a plan besides knowing what the project needed to include
- I rolled out a piece of clay and made a cylinder by scoring and slipping the two ends of the slab after beveling them
- I then cut out four triangles at the top in order to make the top bigger, and added triangle shaped darts
- After this I decided that the bigger end would look better as the bottom, so I cut out a circle for the bottom and slipped and scored it on
Reflection
- I am happy with this for what it is. I think it is well constructed and I am happy with how the darts turned out. However, I cannot think of much use for it and I am not sure if I will glaze it or not.
