Plan

My plan was to make a dish with a lemon painted on the bottom and leaves on the handles. I knew I was going into this with a short amount of time, so I wanted to do something relatively simple. Therefore, I made this plate using a slump mold. I formed the leaves out of smaller pieces of clay and scored and slipped them on, before painting them with underglaze. I carved the outline of the lemon into the bottom of the pan before painting that with underglaze as well. I attempted to paint the background, but I decided I didn't like the color and decided to fix it with glaze later. However, when I attempted to remove the clay from the mold, parts of it stuck and the clay tore. I had to spend multiple classes putting it back together. I did so by slipping and scoring together the parts that had torn apart, as well as adding clay to fix holes. In the end, it looks significantly worse than it did before, but it is approximately the correct shape, and does hold together. Due to my late start, the time spent working to fix it, and a full kiln when I did finish fixing it, I was unable to fire it even once. Due to this, it is still in greenware, and not painted, as I planned to finish the painting with glaze.

Reflection

I am unhappy with this project. I blame my late start on missing several class periods due to AP testing and having other projects with more immediate due dates. However, I also misjudged how difficult it would be to do something with a slump mold. The other slump molds that I have done this year have gone well and have been very easy to remove. Because of this, I expected this one to be easy as well, and I was not ready for it to go so poorly. I also hoped that I would still be able to get it fired at least once, but due to the full kiln and the firing schedule, this was not possible. I am also unhappy with it because it was unpainted, as I had planned to do this after firing it. Overall, this project has again taught me to allot more time to these kind of projects, even if that was not possible in this case.
